27th Roper‐Hall Prize Medal Competition

​The Rules
  1. The 27th Roper‐Hall Prize Medal Competition is open to any member of the junior medical staff within the Health Education England Postgraduate Schools of Ophthalmology Training Schemes, junior research fellows and more senior clinical trainees undertaking specialty fellowships.
  2. The medal is awarded for a CLINICAL CASE PRESENTATION in which the Trainee must have had some involvement in part of the management of the patient during their training.
  3. Abstracts will be reviewed for coherence and scientific style, so it is very important that Trainees show their proposed abstract to their supervising consultant or consultant trainer in charge of the case prior to final submission.
  4. There are two tiers of shortlisting.
  • Oral Presentation
  • Poster Presentation
  1. The top‐rated 7 abstracts will be invited to present their cases at the Grand Final event when they will be assessed according to presentation skills, use of audio‐visual aids, scientific importance, clinical content, originality and the message to be learnt.
  2. The runners up will be invited to present as a poster presentation
  3. A Judging Panel of consultants will quiz the finalists and questions will be taken from floor.
  4. Both Panel and Audience vote. The Judges vote is added to the Audience Vote (60:40) to identify the winner.
  5. In the event of a tie, the Head Judge (the Sir Adrian Cadbury Lecturer) will have the deciding vote.
  6. The case presentations should specifically aim to either improve clinical practice, or there should be a message to be learnt from the case scenario.
The Prize
  1. The winner will receive a hallmarked solid silver Roper‐Hall Prize Medal which will be engraved with the winner’s name.
  2. A £250 cheque donated from the Roper‐Hall Eye Foundation (CIO)
  3. Their name will be added to the Roper‐Hall Honours Board at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre
Abstract Submission
  1. Abstracts must be submitted using the case abstract form that can be downloaded here.
  2. Personal data is for 2019 R‐HEF medal competition communication only and will not be handed to any third party without the consent of the presenter.
  3. Please adhere to the character limits for each section.
  4. Once you have completed your abstract, please ensure you save and name your submission in the following format: given name initial underscore surname e.g. <<f_bloggs>>
  5. Email your final abstract to bmehalumni@gmail.com
  6. Incorrectly named files will not be accepted.
  7. Submission deadline is midnight (00.00h (Greenwich Mean Time)) on 31st October 2019.
  8. Late submissions will not be accepted.
  9. Do not forget to register for the meeting: https://www.bmehalumni.co.uk/registration.html. All shortlisted presenters (oral or poster) who are not part of the BMEH Alumni, will be given a bonus 40% discount on the registration rates.
