Now in its 29th year, and for the second time, the flagship Christmas postgraduate teaching event will be held virtually in a webinar format on Friday 10th December 2021. As in previous years, the event will pair up with the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital Alumni Association Annual Scientific meeting, and the Academic Unit of Ophthalmology Alumni’s Sir Adrian Cadbury Lecture.

The Prize
  1. The winner will receive a hallmarked solid silver Roper-Hall Prize Medal which will be engraved with the winner’s name.
  2. A £250 cheque donated from the Roper-Hall Eye Foundation (CIO)
  3. Their name will be added to the Roper-Hall Honours Board at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre

The Rules
  1. The Roper-Hall Prize Medal Competition is open to any member of the junior medical staff within the Health Education England Postgraduate Schools of Ophthalmology Training Schemes, junior research fellows and more senior clinical trainees undertaking specialty fellowships.
  2. The medal is awarded for a CLINICAL CASE PRESENTATION in which the Trainee must have had some involvement in part of the management of the patient during their training.
  3. Abstracts will be reviewed for coherence and scientific style, so it is very important that Trainees show their proposed abstract to their supervising consultant or consultant trainer in charge of the case prior to final submission.
  4. The finalists will be invited to present their cases at the Grand Final event when they will be assessed according to presentation skills, use of audio-visual aids, scientific importance, clinical content, originality and the message to be learnt.
  5. A Judging Panel of consultants will quiz the presenters and questions will be taken from floor.
  6. Both Panel and Audience vote. The Judges vote is added to the Audience Vote (60:40) to identify the winner. In the event of a tie, the Head Judge (the Sir Adrian Cadbury Lecturer) will have the deciding vote.
  7. The case presentations should specifically aim to either improve clinical practice, or there should be a message to be learnt from the case scenario.
